Although I am not a rescue of WILDLIFE SA, I am still considered as a very important part of the team, you see I go out to educational displays where my mum & dad teach the public about my species in general. I am a Rough Scale Python, and below is a little bit about me.
The Rough Scaled Python has several interesting characteristics that set it apart from other Australian pythons.
Found only in a small pocket in a remote area of the Kimberleys, Western Australia, being discovered by chance in 1981 by a team who were out in the field radio tracking Scaly Tailed Possums. Some Rough Scaled Python specimens were brought into captivity at a later date.
Once very rare in captivity, not to mention very expensive, being easily bred, it is now commonly available with a much lower price tag.
They have beautiful markings with a pale body and dark blotches and have amazing blue–blue/grey eyes. They obtain an overall length of around 2 meters.
Their most unique feature is that they have rough or keeled scales unlike any other python species. They have forward-directed eyes, allowing them to have binocular vision. The Rough Scaled Python also has the longest teeth of any python for its size. Rough Scaled pythons have the ability to vary their colour slightly on a day/night cycle, becoming paler at night.
The Rough Scaled Python is genetically related to the Green Tree Python and they are the only two predominately arboreal Australian pythons, preferring to spend most of their time coiled up on a branch of a tree. In the wild they have been found sitting on rock ledges, in caves and in trees. They even hunt this way, waiting curled up on a branch with their heads facing downwards ready to ambush any prey that may wander past. They predate upon small mammals and birds.
Another interesting and unique characteristic of the Rough Scaled Python is its threat display. When feeling threatened, rather than biting, it will lunge forward with its mouth wide open exposing its rather long teeth and whitish mouth. For those who might remember, the threat display of a Rough Scale Python reminds me of the Reach toothbrush TV commercial with the man with a flip top head.
Placid and amiable to handling makes this python popular with hobbyists.
